Sperm Shop
By Roger Wagner, University of Delaware
In mammals, sperm is generated in long, thread-like tubes, called seminiferous tubules (beige). Each tube is lined with an epithelium that contains spermatogonia cells (blue). Over the course of ~64 days, these cells differentiate into mature sperm cells (yellow). The spermatogonia cells divide by mitosis to produce diploid spermatocytes (lavender), which then undergo meiosis to generate two haploid spermatids. Spermatids develop further through “spermatogenesis” into the elongated spermatozoa (yellow).
Image: Cross section of a rat seminiferous tubule imaged with a Phillips 501 scanning electron micrograph (~500X). The spermatogonia and spermatocytes are colored blue and lavender, respectively, while the mature sperm cells are yellow. Color was added with the paintbrush in “Color” mode on Photoshop; the “plastic wrap” filter was then applied to add a glistening appearance.

BOOKISH BEASTS: CSC Zine & Comic Fest

With Wondercon not in San Francisco this year there is not great comics events happening in April. Wouldn’t be great to have a local comics event that was a s uniques as San Francisco? The Center for Sex & Culture is a fantastic multi-use space that is perfect for a small gathering of local artists whose works need to be celebrated for their stance outside the mainstream.

Bookish Beasts is a one day zine fest for the creators of art, books and comics featuring sex, sexuality, gender and erotica. We want to give you the opportunity to exhibit your works, and connect with local readers who love and collect adult material.

This is a not for profit event that is free to the public, Although as we live to support local artist we will  need some help from you t make this happen. We are asking for $20 to split an 8’ table with chairs. You will be responsible for cashiering your own sales and all profits are your own. The CSC has enough chars but will need to rent tables and promote the event. If this sounds like a great event that you want to get involved with please confirm right away.

The event is one day. April 14th from noon to 6PM. There will some presentations and workshops following. Please let us know if you are interested in participating or would like to propose a workshop or presentation.

CSC provides judgement-free educations, cultural events, a library/media archive, and other resources to audiences across the sexual and gender spectra; and to research and disseminate factual information, framing and incoming issues of public policy health. Please consider donating copies of your work to the library and helping spread the word about this great resource. All of the CSC Library books are searchable though Goodreads and CSC’s Zineography, along with their growing zine catalog/database, which is currently being cataloged

If interested in participating or for more information contact us- gallery@sexandculture.org

The World’s Oldest Pornography ⇢

The cast of 100 figures presents what is obviously a fertility ritual (or several). They range in size from more than nine feet tall to just a few inches. …  Ithyphallic is archeology-talk for “erect penis,” and nearly all of the males have one. A third set of figures appear to be bisexual. Combining elements of males and females, they are ithyphallic but wear female headwear, a decoration on the chest, and sometimes a mask. They might be shamans.”

From The Nu Project
“The Nu Project is a series of honest nudes of women from all over the world. The project began in 2005 and has stayed true to the original vision: no professional models, minimal makeup and no glamour. The focus of the project has been and continues to be the subjects and their personalities, spaces, insecurities and quirks.”

Scholars have long maintained that each era has a unique spirit, a nature or climate that sets it apart from all other epochs. In German, such a spirit is known as “Zeitgeist,” from the German words “Zeit,” meaning “time,” and “Geist,” meaning “spirit” or “ghost.” Some writers and artists assert that the true zeitgeist of an era cannot be known until it is over, and several have declared that only artists or philosophers can adequately explain it. While we are not setting out to define a Queer Zeitgeist, the exhibition will expose and comment on manifestations of our cultural moment.
We are looking for artistic expressions that reflect or critique the intellectual, ethical and cultural climate of our queer times.
We hope to present trends in queer arts such as: queer craft, traditional as well as experimental works of painting, drawing, and sculpture, work that foregrounds emotional content and/or performance over formal aesthetics, new ways of representing the erotic, the body, gender and identity, reflections on the queer archive, ideas of domesticity, new ways of thinking about public and private space, queer time, remixed and repurposed work including collage and assemblage, eco/environmental work, the return to analog, all things digital, networked art, manifestations of social practice, relational work, collaborative work, activist art, interventions, propaganda, new approaches to film and video, audio art. International artists that offer a global perspective on queer art making are strongly encouraged to apply.
All media and artistic practices will be considered.

The Center for Sex and Culture’s Grace Alley Mural Project on Offbeatr: Looking to raise $2000 by December 22nd 2012 for public art celebrating San Francisco’s past sexual renegades, founders, activists, and healers.

http://offbeatr.com/project/grace-alley-mural-project-10161016955

The Center for Sex & Culture is in the process of conceptualizing and creating a public art project, the Grace Alley Mural Project, to be featured on the exterior of the Center for Sex & Culture building on the wall at Grace Alley.  We have a team of our very own notorious (and not-so-notorious) muralists prepared to collaborate on this Mural, a highlight of San Francisco’s sexual history and culture.  Our group of talented artists includes Eddie CollaFinley CoylAmandalynn, and Éclair Acuda Bandersnatch.  Their work on Grace Alley will pay homage to our city’s past sexual renegades, founders, activists and healers.

The Mural will be situated amidst nightlife, non-profits, neighborhood residential and mixed commerce — but it’s also a location in need of beautification to our Public Spaces.  It will emphasize the good work of non-profit organizations centered around sex, enhance the good work we are doing here and let the surrounding community know we are an organization that plans to stay and grow in this neighborhood.  The Mural will be a celebration of sex-positivity, knowledge and the work San Francisco has pioneered and achieved on behalf of sexual health, education and openness.

This Mural is a true labor of love — for sex, the community and the sex community, but we ask for your financial support to make this loving project really happen.  Specifically, your monetary donations would help toward the rental of electric scissor lifts (to be used to physically elevate the artists as they work on the wall), artists’ commissions and project supplies.  Any contributions you may be able to provide toward that estimation will be deeply cherished!

To see more images of the Grace Alley Mural Project follow us on Facebook, visit our Tumblr, or come see it in person at 1349 Mission Street in San Francisco, but we need your donations to fill this wall with art.
